How to check network protocols supported by your instance of MS SQL/MSDE?

Sometimes an MS SQL Server/MSDE instance is installed, but other programs cannot connect to it. This will make it impossible for AvailSuite to install into that instance. The most frequent reason to this problem is disabled network protocols for the SQL Server. To resolve this problem, do the following:

  1. Run C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\svrnetcn.exe
  2. Select the name of the instance. It is displayed in the selector Instance(s) on this server.
  3. The list box of Enabled protocols (the right list) must contain TCP/IP.
    1. If not, please move TCP/IP from the left list to the right list.
    2. Click OK and get a message that the change will be applied only after re-starting the server.
    3. Run C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\sqlmangr.exe
    4. Check the server name in the top selector.
    5. Stop the server and start it again.
